The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI), in collaboration with Sahcon Fumigation and Cleaning Services, Dr. Dahiru Hashim Foundation, and Dube Charity Foundation, has conducted a capacity-building and empowerment programme for over 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), widows, and vulnerable women in Kano State.
The programme, was aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and social inclusion through practical training on waste recycling and PET recovery systems.
Speaking during the event, the Coordinator of V-PeSDI, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, said the initiative was designed to equip vulnerable groups with skills that would enable them to transform waste into economic opportunities while contributing to environmental protection.
According to her, waste recycling goes beyond environmental sanitation, describing it as a strategic tool for economic empowerment, climate action, and inclusive community development.
She noted that empowering vulnerable persons through recycling initiatives contributes significantly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 on Climate Action, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
The training featured practical sessions on proper waste collection and segregation methods, PET recovery and recycling systems, opportunities within the recycling value chain, entrepreneurship development, and educational support initiatives linked to PET recovery.
As part of the empowerment package, beneficiaries received operational starter kits, including electronic weighing scales, face masks, hand gloves, and financial support of ₦20,000 each to enable them to actively participate in the recycling value chain and improve their economic independence.
V-PeSDI described the programme as part of its continued commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and Persons with Disabilities through innovative and sustainable development initiatives capable of creating long-term social and economic impact.
The organization expressed appreciation to its partners — Sahcon Fumigation and Cleaning Services, Dr. Dahiru Hashim Foundation, and Dube Charity Foundation — for their collaboration and commitment toward improving the lives of vulnerable persons in Kano State.
The group also commended the facilitators, participants, volunteers, and supporters whose contributions ensured the success of the programme.
The partners reaffirmed their collective commitment to building a cleaner, more inclusive, and economically sustainable future for vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
