The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has intensified efforts to strengthen integrity and accountability in Nigeria’s public institutions by sensitising staff of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) on whistleblowing and anti-corruption ethics.
The awareness programme, organised by the ICPC Lagos State Office at the College’s campus in Ijanikin, Lagos, forms part of the Commission’s preventive strategy aimed at building corruption-resistant institutions through public education and stakeholder engagement.
Speaking during the session, ICPC official, Mrs. Yvonne William-Mbata, highlighted the importance of the Whistleblowing Policy and the provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
She described whistleblowing as a vital tool in the fight against corruption and encouraged staff to report unethical practices through established channels. She assured participants that the policy provides adequate protection for whistleblowers against intimidation and victimisation.
Also speaking, Mr. Emeka Okaro educated participants on the Regulations and Guidelines on the Acceptance of Gifts, Donations and Hospitality by public officers.
He cautioned public servants against accepting gifts or favours that could influence, or be perceived to influence, their official responsibilities, stressing that strict compliance with the regulations is essential to preventing conflicts of interest and maintaining public confidence in government institutions.
The interactive session provided participants with the opportunity to seek clarification on ethical issues in the workplace, whistleblowing procedures and the practical application of anti-corruption laws in the public service.
The ICPC said the sensitisation programme reflects its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and ethical conduct across public institutions through preventive measures alongside enforcement.
The Commission noted that strengthening institutional integrity remains critical to improving governance and ensuring efficient public service delivery across the country.
