The Bayero University Kano Alumni Association (BUKAA) on Saturday, September 6, 2025, held its 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together distinguished graduates from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones for a day of reflection, networking, and renewed commitment to the University’s development.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Haruna Musa who is also an alumnus of the class of 1991, commended the association for sustaining its relevance over the years.
He assured alumni of the University management’s open-door policy, highlighting recent achievements.
“Bayero University is doing well currently ranked 6th among Nigerian universities, 4th among public universities, and 1st in international visibility. With effective leadership, stakeholder engagement, and enhanced funding, we will take the University to even greater heights,”
Also addressing the gathering, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Air Vice Marshal Saddik Isma’ila Kaita (rtd.), called on the association to institutionalize an annual alumni day.
He stressed that such an initiative would deepen bonds among graduates and help inspire current students to value alumni relations.
The keynote lecture on Corporate Governance was delivered by Ambassador Shuaibu A. Ahmed, former Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, represented by Alhaji Ali Madugu, CEO of Dala Foods.
He emphasized that accountability and transparency are vital not only for businesses but also for non-profit organizations like alumni associations, as they enhance credibility, sustainability, and impact.
Chairman of the occasion, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, praised BUKAA’s progress but urged inclusivity, noting that “there are still challenges ahead, and all alumni must be actively engaged and united.”
During the business session, members unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the leadership, endorsed the audited financial report, and pledged stronger support for ongoing projects.
In a major highlight, BUKAA launched its first-ever dedicated alumni website, described by Chairman Alhaji Shuaibu Idris as a milestone that will transform alumni relations.
“Whether you graduated in 1980 or 2020, this website makes it easier to connect, network, and give back,” Idris said. He added that the site will serve as a hub for communication, donations, and professional support among graduates.
Idris also outlined ongoing projects under the association, including water supply improvements at the new campus, modern sanitation facilities for students, and the creation of a substantial endowment fund to support university development.
Earlier in his welcome address, Idris explained that the AGM had been shifted from the first to the last quarter of the year due to unforeseen circumstances but assured members that subsequent meetings would return to the traditional schedule.
The meeting ended with a vote of thanks delivered by BUKAA Vice-President I, Aare Akinkunmi Akinyemi, who appreciated the contributions of all alumni and stakeholders to the successful hosting of the 35th AGM.
