The Kano State Government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change into a single ministry as part of ongoing efforts to improve administrative efficiency, strengthen policy coordination, and optimize resource utilization.
The approval was granted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and conveyed through a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk Ibrahim, dated June 1, 2026.
Under the new arrangement, the merged entity will be known as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change.
According to the circular, the decision is aimed at enhancing the management of environmental and water-related issues across the state while ensuring more effective delivery of government services.
To maintain operational efficiency and sector-specific focus, the ministry will operate through two distinct directorates: the Directorate of Water Resources and the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Each directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary, both of whom will report directly to the Commissioner overseeing the ministry.
The government also directed all departments, agencies, and units previously under the two separate ministries to immediately align their operations, reporting structures, and official correspondence with the new administrative framework.
The merger takes immediate effect, with the state government urging all relevant stakeholders to cooperate fully to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
The circular further noted that additional guidelines outlining the operational framework of the newly established ministry will be issued in due course. This version follows a standard news style, with a strong lead, clear structure, and attribution suitable for publication.
