The Kano State Police Command has arrested five men for allegedly impersonating police officers and using fake identification to extort unsuspecting members of the public.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Kano.
According to Kiyawa, the suspects — Aliyu Abbas (35), Sani Iliyasu (47), Ashiru Sule (41), Abubakar Yahaya (45), and Adamu Kalilu (45) — were apprehended on October 16 by operatives of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) following credible intelligence reports.
He explained that items recovered from the suspects include a fake police warrant card, handcuffs, mutilated naira notes, 2,500 CFA francs, and a blue Peugeot 406 vehicle with registration number NSR-188-BD.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to using the counterfeit warrant card to extort citizens and engage in various illegal activities across Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States.
Kiyawa added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to fighting crime and warned individuals against impersonating security personnel.
He further stated that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
