The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano State Chapter, has called for stronger collaboration among media unions, security agencies, and development partners to promote professionalism, ethical journalism, and peace, particularly among young and emerging media practitioners.
The call was made by the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kano State Chapter, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, during a one-day Peace Summit organized by YOSPIS, AMG Foundation, and the Nigeria Police Force, Kano State Command, held at the Khairan University Hall in Kano.
Speaking at the summit, Kabara emphasized the need for closer cooperation between the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), NAWOJ, and other relevant stakeholders to guide young journalists, curb misinformation, and strengthen public trust in the media.
She commended the organizers for creating a platform that promotes peace, responsible journalism, and youth engagement, describing the initiative as timely in addressing challenges facing the media profession and society at large.
Kabara also praised the Nigeria Police Force for its proactive engagement with journalists and civil society, noting that sustained dialogue between security agencies and the media is critical to fostering mutual understanding and maintaining peaceful coexistence.
The summit attracted hundreds of participants, including youths, media professionals, academics, and community leaders. Dignitaries at the event included the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Bakori; Dr. Bala Muhammad of Bayero University, Kano; DSP Haruna Kiyawa; Musa Abdullahi Sufi; Dr. Aminu Magashi; Comrade Abbas Ibrahim; representatives of the Emirate Council; and the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Hajiya Maimuna, among others.
NAWOJ Kano also acknowledged the contributions of YOSPIS and AMG Foundation to peacebuilding, youth development, and media enlightenment in the state.
Special commendation was given to the Chief Executive Officer of YOSPIS, Zahra’u Nasir Ahmad, for her leadership and commitment to empowering women and young people.
The association reaffirmed its readiness to partner with relevant stakeholders to promote ethical journalism, peace, and a responsible media environment that contributes positively to societal development in Kano State.
