The Kano South Concerned Elders Forum has called on Abba Kabiru Yusuf to appoint Kabiru Alhassan Rurum as the next Deputy Governor of Kano State.
The appeal follows the nomination of Rurum, alongside Rabiu Suleiman Bichi and Murtala Sule Garo, by a legacy group within the All Progressives Congress for the governor’s final selection to fill the vacant position.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its chairman, Masaud El-Jibril Doguwa, the forum described Rurum’s nomination as a potential turning point for the Kano South Senatorial Zone.
The group noted that the zone had, for over three decades, been excluded from occupying the position of Deputy Governor despite producing capable political figures.
“For the first time in over 30 years, someone from the zone has come close to being nominated as Deputy Governor,” the statement said, adding that previous attempts by politicians from the area to secure top executive positions had not materialised.
The elders, including prominent figures such as Musa Salihu, Alhassan Kibya, Rabiu Bala, Yau Beza and Wai Ado, lamented what they described as longstanding political imbalance in the state’s leadership structure.
They pointed out that Kano South, which comprises 16 local government areas and is one of the largest senatorial zones in the country, has long sought equitable representation at the highest levels of governance.
While commending Governor Yusuf for his leadership style, which they described as fair and inclusive, the forum stressed that appointing Rurum would further strengthen the administration and promote political balance.
They also highlighted Rurum’s political experience, noting his tenure as a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and his current role as a member of the House of Representatives.
According to the elders, Rurum is a grassroots politician with a wide network across the state and beyond, as well as a team player committed to delivering democratic dividends.
They expressed confidence that his appointment would enhance governance and foster greater inclusiveness in the state.
