The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency NEMA , Zubaida Umar, has called for stronger collaboration between disaster management agencies to improve flood preparedness and response across Nigeria.
Mrs. Umar made the call during a working visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency in Abuja.
According to her, closer cooperation between NEMA and NIHSA is critical in ensuring timely release of hydrological forecast data, effective dissemination of early warning information, preparedness coordination and monitoring of climate-related disaster trends.
She stressed the importance of continuous technical engagement through a strategic flood early warning platform to support proactive disaster management and reduce the impact of flooding and related hazards nationwide.
Mrs. Umar noted that enhanced synergy between both agencies would strengthen national efforts toward promoting risk-informed flood preparedness, improving coordinated response planning and building resilient communities.
The NEMA Director General also highlighted ongoing efforts by the agency following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook.
She said NEMA had continued to engage stakeholders at both national and sub-national levels to encourage preparedness actions and early mitigation measures in flood-prone communities across the country.
Responding, the Director General of Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, appreciated the visit and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with NEMA.
He assured that NIHSA would continue providing timely hydrological data and technical support to enhance flood forecasting, annual flood outlooks and dissemination of early warning information.
Mr. Mohammed further emphasized the need for stronger institutional partnerships to reduce the impact of flooding and other water-related disasters on vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
