Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has officially handed over the 24 rescued schoolgirls of Maga Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School to their families, a day after they regained freedom from bandits.
The brief handover ceremony was held at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, in the presence of the girls’ parents, government officials, security representatives, and well-wishers.
Speaking at the event, Governor Idris commended the courage and professionalism of the security operatives involved in the search-and-rescue mission.
He also appreciated the people of Kebbi State for their prayers and unwavering support throughout the ordeal.
The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift intervention and directives to security agencies.
He equally acknowledged the roles played by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and the National Security Adviser, who were directed to relocate to Kebbi to oversee the rescue operations.
Governor Idris described the return of the schoolgirls as a moment of relief and urged their parents to allow them to return to school, noting that education in Kebbi State remains free from primary to tertiary level.
He assured the public that the rescued girls were in good health and confirmed that none of them was molested while in captivity.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Malam Illiyasu Garba, who had four daughters among the abducted students, expressed deep gratitude to the governor for his steadfast support and commitment throughout the incident.
