The Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KNCDC), in collaboration with an NGO Zayt Foundation for Vulnerable Women and Children, has conducted a sensitization and awareness campaign on infectious diseases associated with the harmattan season.
The outreach, held at Malam Babba School in Hausawa Danfulani, Tarauni Local Government Area, also featured the distribution of cold-weather relief items and Tom Brown (nutritious porridge) to Almajiri students.
KNCDC Leads Breakthrough in Public Health Communication
The campaign, themed Harmattan is not a time to get sick; protect yourself against infectious diseases began with an opening prayer led by the Head Teacher, Malam Babba.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of KNCDC, Professor Muhammad Adamu Abbas emphasized the importance of community-level sensitization during the harmattan season.
He highlighted the state government’s sustained efforts to combat infectious diseases prevalent during the period, including scabies.
Professor Abbas further disclosed that KNCDC is currently conducting a census of Tsangaya and Almajiri schools on the directive of the Commissioner of Health.
The exercise, he said, is aimed at generating reliable data that will guide future targeted health interventions. He commended schools such as that of Malam Babba for their cooperation with health officials.

Representing the Chairman of Zayt Foundation, Alhaji Abdurrahim Yakubu, Hajjiya Nafisat Murtala reaffirmed the Foundation’s dedication to supporting vulnerable children, particularly Almajirai, and emphasized the significance of the outreach.
The outreach concluded with the distribution of warm clothing and Tom Brown porridge provided by the Zayt Foundation.
Expressing appreciation, Head Teacher Malam Babba thanked the Kano State Government, KNCDC, and the Foundation for their continued support to Tsangaya schools and vulnerable children.
