The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Jibril Ismail Falgore, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to enacting impactful legislation that addresses gender-based violence and other harmful practices undermining the rights, dignity, and well-being of women and girls in the state.
In a statement digned by his Spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, Falgore emphasized that the Kano State House of Assembly is actively working on quality legislation aimed at improving the living standards of the people, particularly through oversight functions that directly safeguard human rights in Kano State.
Falgore noted that stronger collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Kano Office, is essential to reinforce legislative frameworks, tackle pressing challenges, and align with both national and international human rights standards.
Commending the Speaker, the Kano State Coordinator of NHRC Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi applauded Falgore’s leadership for consistent quality legislation in critical areas, especially in ensuring accountability, justice, and fairness for all residents of Kano.
He expressed gratitude to the Speaker and Honourable Members of the Assembly for honouring their visit and highlighted key areas where partnership with the House will play a vital role:
1. Enhancing budgetary support for agencies and programs involved in legal aid, prevention, and response.
2. Supporting continuous oversight of security agencies, justice institutions, and other relevant bodies to ensure compliance with human rights principles.
3. Promoting public awareness through constituency platforms and legislative influence.
4. Strengthening legislative frameworks to address gender-based violence and harmful practices.
Furthermore, the Kano State Coordinator noted that as Nigeria marks this year’s 16 Days of Activism themed around justice, prevention, and accountability, the NHRC deeply appreciates the Kano State House of Assembly’s consistent cooperation and unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and good governance.
