The Dala Local Government Council in Kano State has imposed a ban on the traditional drum beating practice known as Gangi across the entire local government area, citing escalating security challenges.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the council, Alhaji Suraj Ibrahim Imam, following a security meeting held at the council secretariat.
According to Alhaji Suraj, the ban was necessary to ensure peaceful coexistence and safeguard lives and property in the area, amid increasing incidents of thuggery and urban violence.
“The activities associated with Gangi drum beating have, at times, encouraged intoxication and unruly behaviour, which often escalate into criminal acts and public disturbances,” he said.
He emphasized that Dala Local Government has a long-standing reputation for producing prominent figures in socio-economic, political, and educational fields, and the council would not allow the actions of a few individuals to tarnish this image.
The chairman confirmed that the ban takes immediate effect and will remain until further notice. He also expressed sympathy for victims of recent violent incidents, including the Ward Head of Rijiya Biyu, whose residence was reportedly set ablaze during disturbances.
Alhaji Suraj urged residents to live peacefully and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that meaningful development cannot thrive in an environment of insecurity and unrest. He further thanked residents and security operatives for their continued support, calling for sustained collaboration to restore peace and normalcy in the area.
