Police in Malawi have arrested nine additional suspects over allegations of spreading false information linked to claims of disappearing private parts, amid growing panic in parts of the country.
According to a statement issued by the National Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Alfred Chimthere, the suspects were arrested after reporting on May 10, 2026 that their genitals had allegedly vanished after physical contact with other individuals.
The incidents, which police described as false, are connected to ongoing rumours and superstitious beliefs circulating in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts regarding alleged magical acts.
Police said all the complainants were referred to Nsanje District Hospital for medical examination, where doctors confirmed that their private parts were intact and that no abnormalities were detected.
Authorities warned that the false allegations have continued to create fear and tension among residents in the affected communities.
The newly arrested suspects were identified as Boniface Beka, Clement Kaduya, Precious Kaduya, Shadrick Sande, Chisomo Eliasi, Jeremiah Esaya, Edward Fatsani, Nelson Andiseni, and Beatrice Geofry, all from Nsanje District.
Police said the latest arrests bring the total number of suspects detained over similar claims to 14, following the arrest of five others earlier.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to publishing false information likely to cause public fear and alarm.
