The Kano State Government has officially launched the 2025/2026 Annual School Census (ASC),reiterating it’s dedication to strengthening education planning through the generation of accurate, reliable and up-to-date data.
Flagging off the exercise at the Ministry of Education’s Conference Hall, the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Dr. Ali Makoda, described the Annual School Census as a critical tool for producing credible statistics that will support evidence-based policymaking, effective planning, equitable resource allocation and improved service delivery across the state’s education sector.

Dr. Makoda urged all stakeholders participating in the exercise to ensure accuracy, transparency and timeliness in collecting and submitting data, stressing that reliable information remains essential for sustainable education development.
The commissioner thereafter declared the 2025/2026 Annual School Census officially open and presented sample census questionnaires and other data collection materials to key education agencies.
These included the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSSMB), State Agency for Mass Education (SAME), State Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB), and the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board (PVIMB), marking the commencement of the statewide exercise.
Also speaking, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Yusha’u Hamza Kafinchiri, outlined the objectives, scope, methodology, implementation timeline and expected outcomes of the exercise.
He explained that the census would collect comprehensive information on schools, enrolment, teachers, infrastructure and other key education indicators to support informed policy formulation and implementation.
Representatives of development partners, including UNICEF, Plan International and the Development Research and Projects Centre (DRPC), commended the Kano State Government for sustaining the Annual School Census.
They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Ministry in strengthening education data systems and ensuring the availability of quality statistics for the development of the education sector.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by directors of the Ministry, heads of education agencies, representatives of development partners, education stakeholders and other dignitaries.
