The Kano State Government has commenced the planting of 800 tree seedlings at the Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen climate resilience.
The initiative, tagged “Make AKCILS Green,” is being implemented by the college’s Department of Agricultural Science in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change.
The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahir Hashim, flagged off the exercise on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Hashim described the tree-planting campaign as a practical step towards creating a greener campus, promoting environmental responsibility among students and mitigating the effects of climate change.
He urged schools, tertiary institutions, government agencies, private organisations and individuals across the state to embrace tree planting and other environmental sustainability initiatives.
The Commissioner commended the college for translating environmental awareness into practical action, describing the initiative as a model that could be replicated by other institutions across Kano State.
He said the Acting Provost of the college, Dr Ali Tamasi Mu’az, also commended the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for its environmental and climate change reforms.
The college presented some requests for intervention from the Ministry, which Hashim said had been accepted, with action already commenced on them.
He stressed that sustained tree planting and responsible environmental management were essential to improving environmental quality and strengthening Kano’s resilience to climate-related challenges.
The initiative is expected to create a greener learning environment for students while promoting greater awareness and responsibility towards environmental protection and sustainability.
