The Kano State Government has announced plans to establish a solar panel manufacturing plant in partnership with Tricell Solar, a global renewable energy company, positioning the state as a major hub for solar energy development in Nigeria.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting between the Kano State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, and a delegation from Tricell Solar to advance the implementation of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) earlier signed by both parties.
Speaking at the meeting, Engr. Dr. Shehu said the initiative aligns with the state government’s agenda to drive economic growth, industrial development, and sustainable energy access.
He noted that Kano’s strategic location and investment-friendly policies make it well suited to lead Nigeria’s renewable energy transition.
According to him, the partnership will strengthen energy security, promote industrialization, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and expand economic opportunities for residents of the state.
The Commissioner for Solid Mineral Resources, Alhaji Hamza Safiyanu, described the project as visionary, noting that it represents a major milestone toward delivering reliable electricity and sustainable energy solutions across Kano State.
Leading the Tricell Solar delegation, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Ali Kobeissi, presented a technical outline of the project and disclosed that the proposed plant is expected to generate thousands of jobs, stimulate local industries, and improve access to affordable clean energy.
Engr. Kobeissi further revealed that the project aims to deliver up to 500 megawatts of power, deploy advanced solar technology, and attract significant international investment to Kano State.
Also speaking, Tricell Solar’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Benson Osjeiye, alongside Ms. Jana Kobeissi, highlighted additional benefits including the growth of small and medium-scale enterprises, improved electricity supply to homes and businesses, skills transfer, and overall socio-economic development.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Public Procurement, and the Kano Hydro and Energy Development Company.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to fast-tracking all necessary processes to ensure the timely take-off of the solar panel manufacturing plant, which is expected to play a key role in advancing renewable energy development in Kano State and Nigeria at large.
