The Prix Galien Africa has once again celebrated excellence and innovation in African health research and technology, honouring groundbreaking contributions to healthcare improvement across the continent.
Now in its fifth consecutive year, the prestigious award recognizes researchers, institutions, and companies in both the public and private sectors for outstanding achievements in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, herbal medicine, diagnostics, medical devices, and digital health solutions introduced to the African market.
Health Sovereignty in Focus as REMAPSEN, Galien Africa Hold Pre-Forum Webinar
Following a rigorous selection process overseen by the Prize’s governing bodies including the Board of Directors, Jury, and Honorary Committee the Co-Presidents of the Jury, Dr. John Nkengasong and Professor Souleymane Mboup, announced the 2025 Prix Galien Africa winner as:La Ruche Health (Côte d’Ivoire), founded by Mr. Rory Assandey
Notably, no awards were given in the categories of Best Pharmaceutical Product, Best Traditional Medicine Product, and Best Biotechnology Product for 2025.
The Prix Galien Africa carries a monetary award of 20 million CFA francs (approximately $35,000 USD), recognizing innovation that advances healthcare access and equity across the continent.
La Ruche Health is a francophone African digital health company dedicated to improving healthcare access for marginalized communities particularly women, youth, and low-income groups.
Its flagship innovation is a mobile platform that connects users with certified healthcare providers and culturally sensitive services. By integrating behavioural science and real-time data, the platform personalizes care delivery, addressing needs in mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and primary care.
Since its launch, La Ruche Health has impacted over 75,000 users across Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, with a growing focus on emotional well-being and preventive care.
The Prix Galien Africa Committee also announced two Special Prizes honoring distinguished African professionals for their exceptional contributions to global health and science:
Dr. Michael Makanga (Uganda) – Executive Director, Global Health EDCTP3
Ms. Adji Bousso Dieng (Senegal) – Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Princeton University
The 2025 Prix Galien Africa ceremony will take place during the 8th Galien Forum Africa, scheduled for October 28–31, 2025, in Dakar, Senegal, under the theme:
“Health Sovereignty: An Imperative for Africa.”
The event is supported by the Presidency of the Republic of Senegal, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, West African Health Organization (WAHO), and The Rockefeller Foundation, among others.
