A coalition of friends, colleagues, academics, and comrades will converge in Abuja on April 29, 2026, for a symposium and book launch in honour of the late Comrade Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed mni, in recognition of his lifelong contributions to progressive intellectualism and social justice in Nigeria.
Comrade Mohammed, who passed away on December 11, 2025, was widely described as a committed patriot and a key figure in Nigeria’s socialist and progressive movements. He built a distinguished academic and professional career across institutions including Ahmadu Bello University, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).
Throughout his lifetime, he was known for his advocacy of academic freedom, gender equality, and African development, playing active roles in movements such as the Movement for Progressive Nigeria (MPN), the anti-apartheid struggle, Women in Nigeria (WIN), and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The commemorative event will feature a symposium themed “Scholars and the Social Question in Nigeria: Reflections on the Life of A.S. Mohammed”, to be chaired by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi. Discussants will include Dr. Yusuf Bangura, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, Prof. Aliyah Adamu Ahmad, and Dr. Julie Sanda.
A major highlight of the event will be the formal presentation of his posthumous work titled “The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in Sokoto, 1906”. The book launch session will be chaired by former Sokoto State Governor, Yahaya Abdulkarim, with a review to be delivered by Prof. M. J. Kuna.
Proceeds from the book launch will support an Endowment Fund established to assist the late scholar’s family and sustain the causes he championed during his lifetime.
As part of the programme, Dr. J. Maina will present a biographical tribute highlighting the life and contributions of the man described as a “crusader for the common good.”
The event will hold at BON Elvis Hotel, 2 Monrovia Street, Wuse 2, Abuja, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on April 29, 2026.
Organisers say the symposium and book launch provide an opportunity to reflect on Comrade Mohammed’s legacy and to advance discussions on justice, development, and nation-building in Nigeria.
Members of the academic community, civil society organisations, labour groups, media practitioners, and the general public are invited to attend.
