The Kebbi State Government has relocated the Fati Lami Maternity Unit to a new and more convenient structure within Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.
Chief Medical Director and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Shehu Koko, said the move became necessary due to the growing population of Birnin Kebbi and rising referrals from other hospitals, which had overstretched facilities at the old maternity unit.

He explained that the relocation, directed by Governor Nasir Idris, will enhance service delivery and provide a more conducive environment for patients and healthcare workers.
According to Dr. Koko, the evacuated unit had been plagued by a shortage of beds and limited space, making it difficult to properly accommodate patients and for staff to perform their duties effectively.
He disclosed that the new facility now provides double the bed capacity, an expanded labour room, and the capacity to conduct two surgeries simultaneously—an upgrade expected to significantly improve maternal healthcare services in the state.
Dr. Koko further revealed that Governor Idris has mapped out plans to revitalise six general hospitals across the four Emirates of Kebbi State, including Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, as part of the administration’s comprehensive health sector reforms.
