As part of activities marking the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Alliances for Africa (AfA) team, in collaboration with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Imo State Command, visited Imo Government Girls’ Secondary School, Owerri, to raise awareness on the rising threat of digital violence against young girls.
The team received a warm welcome from the school’s Principal, who led them to address the students during the morning assembly. The session provided a timely opportunity to engage hundreds of students on issues surrounding online safety.
The sensitization, themed “Protecting the Girl Child from Digital Violence,” focused on educating students about the forms, warning signs, and consequences of digital abuse including cyberbullying, online grooming, impersonation, and exposure to harmful content.
Facilitators also emphasized safe online practices and encouraged the girls to speak up when they encounter suspicious or harmful behavior.
The students participated actively, sharing their experiences and asking questions that reflected growing awareness of the risks associated with digital spaces.
To further stimulate engagement, small gift items were presented to students who answered quiz questions correctly, adding excitement to the interactive session.
The Principal expressed deep appreciation to the AfA and NSCDC teams for choosing the school for the campaign, describing the session as timely and impactful. She assured the visitors that the school remains open to future sensitization activities aimed at empowering female students.
The visit forms part of Alliances for Africa’s ongoing efforts to promote the safety, rights, and well-being of girls both online and offline through sustained advocacy and community engagement.
