The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano, has organized a capacity-building workshop for journalists from various media organizations, aimed at improving professional standards and promoting quality journalism across the country.
The training, held as part of activities marking the 2025 Press Week, featured presentations by seasoned media professionals who addressed key aspects of journalistic practice, including safety, ethics, and translation.
Delivering a paper titled “Safety Tips in Journalism,” Chief Press Secretary to the Kano state governor ,Alhaji Mustapha Muhammad outlined practical measures journalists should adopt while covering high-risk assignments such as conflicts, protests, and other dangerous situations.
He explained essential field procedures, including how to manage injuries, control bleeding, and respond effectively in hostile environments. Muhammad urged journalists to place their personal safety above all else while performing their duties.

In another presentation, Alhaji Adamu Salisu of the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) spoke on the “Code of Ethics of Journalism.”
He highlighted the consequences of violating established ethical standards and stressed the need for practitioners to uphold the code of conduct to protect their credibility and ensure a safe and responsible media landscape.
Veteran broadcaster Hajiya Amina Yahayadeen also delivered a session on “Tools for Effective Translation.”
She highlighted the importance of cultural awareness, linguistic competence, and strong writing skills in producing accurate translations.
Yahayadeen encouraged journalists to seek clarification whenever they encounter difficult terminology, noting that collaboration with experienced colleagues enhances quality.
In his remarks, the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, said the workshop demonstrates the union’s commitment to empowering its members with the knowledge and tools needed to excel in their work.
