The Vice-Chancellor of AbdulRasaq Abubakar Toyin University (AATU), Ganmo, Kwara State, Professor Abdulrauf Ambali, has joined members of the 1995 alumni set of Government Secondary School (GSS), Afon, to celebrate their pearl anniversary.
The reunion ceremony, held at the main auditorium of AAT University, was well attended by alumni, former teachers, and invited dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, Professor Ambali described GSS Afon as more than an academic institution, noting that the school plays a crucial role in shaping collective identity, fostering lifelong relationships, and upholding shared values.
The Vice-Chancellor, who also attended GSS Afon and graduated ten years earlier, described the 1995 set as exceptional and pace-setting.
“We hear of you everywhere and every time, as if you are the only set that graduated from GSS Afon,” he remarked, drawing applause from the audience.
He urged members of the 1995 set to continue supporting one another, stressing that “fingers are not equal,” and encouraged them to sustain unity within their set while extending the same support to other alumni, including both seniors and juniors.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Associate Professor Timothy Adekanye, expressed gratitude to members of the 1995 set at home and in the diaspora for their financial contributions and unwavering support, which he said ensured the success of the reunion.
He gave special appreciation to four of their former teachers who attended the event with members of their families, thanking God for preserving their lives to witness the 30th anniversary of their students’ graduation from GSS Afon. He also commended classmates who travelled from far and near to grace the occasion.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of token gifts to former teachers, a special prayer session, reminiscences, goodwill messages, words of encouragement from teachers, and moments of merriment.
Dignitaries present at the reunion included the Vice-Chancellor of AAT University, Professor Abdulrauf Ambali; Mr. Oyelola, former Vice Principal (Administration); Alhaji Salman; Dr. Oke; Dr. Okeola; Mr. AbdurRahman Sanni of the 1986 set; Engr. Aliyu Temim of the 1994 set; and Mallam AbdurRahman Babatunde of the 1996 set.
