UNICEF Nigeria has lauded Nigeria for registering 14 million children’s births over the past two years, a significant expansion in legal identity coverage.
The announcement was made by UNICEF Nigeria Representative, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, during a courtesy visit to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Abdelatef commended the First Lady for her leadership in advancing child welfare and fostering strong collaboration with UNICEF programmes.
She emphasized that birth registration ensures children are officially recognized, enabling access to essential services and long-term protection.
In her remarks, Oluremi Tinubu reiterated that every child has the right to legal identity, noting that efforts must continue until all Nigerian children are registered.
While welcoming the progress, she highlighted ongoing public health concerns, including tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and maternal and child mortality, and pledged sustained partnership with UNICEF to address these challenges.
The collaboration underscores Nigeria’s commitment to child rights, legal identity, and inclusive access to healthcare and social services for all children.
