The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), has convened a stakeholder engagement workshop to review Nigeria’s draft Nuclear and Radiation Safety Policy and Strategy under the European Union Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation (EU-INSC) Project.
The two-day workshop took place at the Conference Room of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) in Abuja.
Representing the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NNRA, General Manager of the Radiological Safety Department, Mr. Farouq Ingawa, said the workshop was organised to review the draft policy and strategy, clarify institutional roles and responsibilities, and gather stakeholders’ input toward finalising and implementing the framework nationwide.
According to him, the engagement is a key step toward strengthening Nigeria’s regulatory structure for nuclear and radiation safety and ensuring effective coordination among relevant institutions.
In his remarks, Director-General of ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, welcomed participants and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting the development and implementation of the policy and strategy.
The workshop brought together participants from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, security institutions, and technical organisations. They examined key provisions of the draft document to enhance Nigeria’s nuclear and radiation safety framework in line with international best practices.
The EU-INSC Project supports partner countries in strengthening nuclear safety regulations, radiation protection, and emergency preparedness, helping ensure safe and secure use of nuclear and radiation technologies for peaceful purposes.
