The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC has arraigned one Gambomi Muhammed before the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri over an alleged N4.5 million employment scam.
The defendant was arraigned by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the EFCC before Justice Aisha Kumaliya on a 10-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence.
According to the EFCC, Muhammed allegedly collected a total of N4.5 million from several individuals between June 2022 and February 2023 under the pretext of securing employment for them with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
One of the charges stated that the defendant obtained money from victims including Musa Yusuf, Kamilu Abubakar, Daniel Kwatri Tizhe, Mustapha Adamu, Yakubu Audu, Kadir Abdullahi, Yakubu John and Cosmas Peter through false representations that he could secure jobs for them in the correctional service.
The anti-graft agency said the offence contravenes Section 1(1) and is punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read before the court.
Following his plea, counsel to the prosecution, S.O. Saka, prayed the court to fix a date for trial and remand the defendant in a correctional facility pending hearing.
Justice Kumaliya subsequently adjourned the matter until May 8, 2026 for commencement of hearing and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Maiduguri Maximum Correctional Facility.
According to the EFCC, investigations revealed that the defendant allegedly diverted the funds for personal use after falsely promising the victims employment opportunities in the Nigerian Correctional Service.
