The Kano State House of Assembly has recommitted the Kano State Electricity Bill 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a state-owned electricity agency to drive independent power development.
The decision followed the consideration of the bill at the Committee of the Whole during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore.
Speaking to newsmen shorty after sitting, the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, said once assented to by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the law would provide for the establishment of an electricity agency to be headed by a Managing Director and governed by a council whose members would serve a three-year term.
He explained that the proposed agency would create an enabling environment for local and foreign investors to participate in electricity generation and distribution, thereby boosting economic development in the state.
The Majority Leader added that with the Assembly’s adoption of the recommittal report, the bill would now be transmitted to the executive arm for assent.
Meanwhile, the House has also adopted a motion of urgent public importance over the vandalisation of electricity infrastructure in Madobi Local Government Area.
The motion, sponsored by the member representing Madobi Constituency, Mukhtar Ishaq, expressed concern over the destruction of electrical cables and other power facilities, particularly during heavy rainfall.
The lawmaker called on the state government and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute those responsible for vandalising electricity infrastructure.
The House referred the motion to its Standing Committee on Electricity for further investigation and directed it to submit its report within one month.
