The Kano Online Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has honoured Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his administration’s support for media development and commitment to strengthening journalism in the state.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Government House, Kano, attended by members of the State Executive Council and other senior government officials.
The Chapel said the recognition was in appreciation of the state government’s partnership in promoting professional journalism, including facilitating the training of more than 50 online journalists in ethical reporting, digital journalism, fact-checking and emerging media technologies.
Receiving the award, Governor Yusuf described the honour as an encouragement to do more in advancing media development in Kano State.
He commended members of the Kano Online Media Chapel for their professionalism and contributions to promoting truth, public awareness and responsible journalism.
The governor pledged continued support for the Nigeria Union of Journalists and other media organisations through capacity-building initiatives and policies aimed at strengthening the journalism profession.
Governor Yusuf also urged journalists to uphold the ethics of the profession by ensuring accuracy, fairness and objectivity in their reports, noting that credible journalism remains essential to good governance, peace and sustainable development.
Presenting the award, Chairman of the Kano Online Media Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, said the recognition reflected Governor Yusuf’s outstanding contributions to media development and his administration’s consistent support for journalists.
He noted that the governor’s investment in capacity building has equipped members of the Chapel with modern reporting skills needed to meet the evolving demands of digital journalism while promoting professionalism, accuracy and ethical reporting.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, commended the Kano Online Media Chapel for promoting responsible journalism and professional excellence.
He described the media as an indispensable partner in democratic governance, stressing that credible and ethical reporting is vital to keeping the public informed and enhancing government accountability.
