The Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, has launched a dedicated Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Team to strengthen coordinated and patient-centred care for men living with prostate cancer.
The initiative was unveiled during the September physical Multidisciplinary Team Meeting organised by the Centre’s Multidisciplinary Cancer Committee in collaboration with Janssen and Johnson Pharmaceuticals.

The meeting brought together specialists and healthcare professionals from various disciplines to promote shared clinical decision-making and better coordination of cancer services.
Those present included the Head of Clinical Services, Dr Bioku Muftau; Head of the Urology Unit, Dr Kene; Chairman of the Multidisciplinary Cancer Committee, Dr Tessy Ahmadu; Clinical Oncologist, Dr Popoola; Urologist, Dr Lovely; and Gynaecologist, Dr Almustapha.
Resident doctors from Oncology, Urology, Pathology and Gynaecology also participated in the meeting, alongside oncology nurses, pharmacists and other members of the cancer care team.
The Centre said the establishment of the Prostate Cancer MDT would provide a structured platform for specialists to contribute their expertise to the management of prostate cancer cases.
Through the initiative, specialists will collaborate on the diagnosis, staging, treatment planning and follow-up of patients, while supporting timely referrals and continuity of care.

The Centre said the development was in line with the broader healthcare direction of the Medical Director, FMC Abuja, Professor Saad Ahmed, which places emphasis on quality healthcare delivery, professional collaboration, specialised services, research and patient-centred care.
It added that multidisciplinary collaboration was an important component of efforts to strengthen comprehensive cancer services and improve access to specialised healthcare.
The September meeting also provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals to jointly review complex cancer cases and incorporate different clinical perspectives into treatment decisions.
The Centre said the MDT structure would further promote continuous professional learning and knowledge-sharing among consultants, resident doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other professionals involved in cancer management.
It explained that collaboration with Janssen and Johnson Pharmaceuticals formed part of efforts to support cancer-care initiatives and professional engagement on improved patient management.

With the activation of the dedicated Prostate Cancer MDT, FMC Abuja said it would continue to develop coordinated pathways for specialised cancer care.
The Centre said the initiative supports its core responsibility of Service to Humanity and its efforts to provide quality, specialised and patient-focused healthcare services.
