The African Union AU has expressed deep concern over the recent military escalation between the United States and Iran, warning that continued hostilities could destabilize global peace and worsen economic challenges across Africa.
In a press statement issued from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the reported strikes carried out by U.S. forces in coordination with Israeli forces against Iranian targets marked a dangerous escalation in Middle East tensions.
Youssouf called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and urgently pursue de-escalation through dialogue, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international law and the United Nations Charter.
“The Chairperson calls for restraint, urgent de-escalation, and sustained dialogue, stressing that all parties must act fully in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security,” the statement said.
The African Union warned that further escalation could have far-reaching global consequences, particularly for African countries already facing economic and security pressures. According to the Commission, increased conflict in the Middle East could disrupt energy markets, worsen food insecurity, and weaken economic resilience across the continent.
The AU also highlighted the importance of diplomatic mediation, noting ongoing international efforts facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman to reduce tensions and prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Youssouf reiterated the AU’s position that diplomacy remains the only viable path to lasting peace.
“Sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, not through force,” he said.
The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful resolution of conflicts and maintaining global stability, while urging all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue over military confrontation.
