The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal), has approved the appointment of Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho as the new Director of Naval Information and spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy.
Captain Folorunsho formally assumed duty on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, taking over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who served in the role for over two years.
Commodore Adams-Aliu has been redeployed to a higher strategic appointment as the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, the Nigerian Navy’s premier operational base.
Born on 27 December 1979 in Benin City, Captain Folorunsho hails from the family of the late Major Peter Adeboji (rtd) and Mrs Rukayat Esther Folorunsho. He completed his primary education at Olua Primary School, Benin City, and Army Command Children School, Zaria, before attending the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, for his secondary education.
He was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1998 as a member of the 50 Regular Course and was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy as a Sub-Lieutenant in September 2003.
The new Director of Naval Information holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy. He also earned a Master of Science degree in War Studies (Maritime) from the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan.
Captain Folorunsho possesses several other postgraduate qualifications, including a Master of Science degree in International Affairs and Defence Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna; a Master of Science degree in Energy Management from the World Maritime University, Malmö, Sweden; and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College, Rhode Island.
In addition, he holds a Graduate Certificate in Ethics and Emerging Military Technology from the United States Naval War College.
Throughout his career, Captain Folorunsho has attended numerous local and international professional courses, including the Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji; the Senior Staff Course at the Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore; the United Nations Staff Officers Course at the SWEDINT Training Centre, Stockholm; and the Naval Warfare Course at the Naval War College of Nigeria, Calabar.
He has served in various operational, instructional, and command roles across the Nigerian Navy. These include shipboard appointments on Nigerian Navy ships ERINOMI, AYAM, and BARAMA, operational deployment under Operation SAFE HAVEN (now Operation ENDURING PEACE), and assignments within both domestic and international missions.
Captain Folorunsho also served as a Military Liaison Officer at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and held key management positions at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Lagos, where he contributed to indigenous shipbuilding projects, including the construction of Nigerian Navy Ship OJI.
Prior to his appointment, he was Chief Instructor at the Department of Maritime Warfare, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and later served as Assistant Director, Plans/CNS Directive, at the Naval Headquarters.
The senior officer is a recipient of several honours and decorations, including Chief of the Naval Staff awards for academic excellence, the United Nations Medal, and other service and merit awards.
Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho is married to Mrs Olawunmi Folorunsho, and their union is blessed with two children. He now assumes responsibility for managing strategic communication and public engagement for the Nigerian Navy.
