Accord Party presidential candidate and Co-Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, says that Democracy Day should serve not only as a celebration of Nigeria’s return to civilian rule but also as a reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard democratic values, including freedom of expression, justice, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.
Hashim made the remarks in a statement in which he condemned the alleged attack on human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, and other protesters during a Democracy Day demonstration.
According to him, the rights to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and civic participation are fundamental pillars of any democratic society and must be protected at all times.
He stressed that democracy thrives when citizens are free to express their views, organise peacefully, and demand accountability from those in authority.
“Democracy is strengthened when citizens can freely speak, organise, and demand accountability. Any attempt to suppress these freedoms weakens democracy itself,” Hashim stated.
The former presidential candidate, who recently assumed office as Co-Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal alongside President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, noted that the movement was established to defend Nigeria’s democratic space and prevent any drift toward authoritarian rule.
Hashim added that the MDR would continue to mobilise democratic forces, civil society groups, organised labour, and citizens committed to protecting democratic institutions and expanding civic freedoms across the country.
He also called on security agencies and relevant authorities to uphold citizens’ constitutional rights while maintaining public order.
