Few could have imagined that Khadija Abdullahi Maikano, one of the many Kano State indigenes awarded overseas scholarships by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, would rise to global academic prominence and make Kano State a reference point for excellence on the international stage.
Khadija distinguished herself by emerging as the Best Outgoing International Postgraduate Student among students from over 85 countries at a prestigious “Deemed University” in India—an extraordinary achievement that underscores the value of investing in education.
Her remarkable performance earned her the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award for Best Outgoing International Postgraduate Student, one of the highest honours reserved strictly for outstanding academic excellence.
The award was presented during the university’s 22nd Convocation Ceremony, a colourful and memorable event that celebrated global scholarship.
To crown the achievement, the Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, personally presented the award to Khadija—an indigene of Kano State who pursued her postgraduate studies under the full sponsorship of the Kano State Government led by Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Beyond this global recognition, Khadija also graduated as the Topper (First Rank) in the MBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management programme, outperforming 101 Indian students and nine international students.
She received the prestigious Topper Award from the Provost, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Dr. Rajiv Yeravdekar.
These achievements further validate the foresight and visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration prioritises education and human capital development, allocating a significant portion of the state budget to the education sector in line with international best practices.
Khadija’s success did not come by chance. Her academic brilliance dates back to her early years. She attended NAF Staff Secondary School for her junior education and later Girls Science Secondary School, where she distinguished herself academically.
She proceeded to study Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions, graduating with flying colours.
Her excellence continued on the national stage when she emerged Second Runner-Up at the 2024 Young Managers Competition organised by the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), competing against over 500 young managers nationwide.
Through the exposure gained from her MBA programme and practical leadership training, Khadija has acquired world-class skills in healthcare management, strategic planning, and human development.
She remains deeply grateful to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity that transformed her academic and professional journey.
Observers believe that it is only fitting for Kano State and the nation to optimally utilise such a rare talent. With her background in Pharmacy and Healthcare Management, Khadija is well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to public health development at both state and federal levels.
Indeed, her story stands as a powerful testimony to the transformative impact of visionary leadership and purposeful investment in education. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf continues to demonstrate that building human capacity is the cornerstone of sustainable development.
As Kano celebrates this global ambassador of excellence, Khadija Abdullahi Maikano remains a shining symbol of what is possible when talent meets opportunity—making Kano proud, Nigeria proud, and inspiring a new generation of young achievers.
