The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State hosted its 2025 Get-Together and Award Night, celebrating past chairmen, long-serving members, elevated former members and friends of the Chapel.
The colourful ceremony, held in Kano, attracted journalists, public officials and notable personalities from across the state.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, expressed gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the success of the event, describing the occasion as historic and symbolic.

He noted that the gathering brought together 10 former chairmen of the Chapel, many of whom are currently serving in different parts of the country and have spent over three decades in the journalism profession.
“Today’s event is unique because we are privileged to host leaders who have dedicated more than 30 years to journalism. For those of us currently serving, it is an honour to meet and celebrate them,”
According to him, the award night was dedicated to reflection, celebration and recognition of service to humanity, stressing that the Chapel also honoured members who have been elevated to higher responsibilities in various fields, as well as friends who have consistently supported the Chapel.

The lawmaker representing Fagge Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Barrister M.B. Shehu, who was honoured as a Friend of the Chapel, used the occasion to urge the Federal Government to reconsider aspects of the proposed tax reform law in the interest of Nigerians.
He also called on the leadership of the National Assembly to approach the tax reform debate with seriousness and sensitivity, while advising journalists and public servants to remain committed to preserving Nigeria’s unity.
“Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity. Despite our political, religious and ethnic differences, Nigeria remains one indivisible nation,” Shehu said, commending the Chapel for organizing what he described as a timely and impactful event.
Among those honoured as Friends of the Chapel were former NUJ President and former Kano State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Muhammad Garba; Associate Professor Sule Ya’u Sule; Inuwa Waya; and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, who was represented by the Managing Director of the National Productivity Commission, Hon. Baffa Babba Dan Agundi.
Others include the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, and former member of the House of Representatives for Kano Municipal, Hon. Sha’aban Sharada.
Awards for elevated members of the Chapel went to Babajide Otitoju, Ja’afar Ja’afar, publisher of Daily Nigerian; Associate Professor Rukaiya Aliyu;Chief Press Secretary to the state governor Mustapha Mohammed; and Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu.
Former chairmen and senior members also honoured include Lamara Garba Azare, Yakubu Musa, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, Tajuddeen Suleiman, Osa Director, Aminu Ahmed Garko and Edwin Olofu.
Recipients of Long Service Awards were Abdullahi Mallam Yusuf, Mohammed Kabir Ya’u, Mohammed Abdulsalam, Jacob Ajakaiye, Desmond Mbogh, Maduabuchi Jerry, Kola Oyelere, and Ahmed Mohammed Soron Dinki.
