Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Hussaini Zakariya, has trained officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Kebbi State Command, on effective investigation and diligent prosecution to strengthen the country’s criminal justice system.
The one-day capacity-building workshop, held in Birnin Kebbi, was organized by the Law Savannah Chambers, aimed at equipping police prosecutors, detectives, and personnel of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) with practical legal skills to improve justice delivery.
Speaking during the training, Zakariya said the Police Act, 2020, and the Kebbi State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), 2020, emphasized the need for lawful and professional conduct at every stage of criminal investigation and prosecution.
He warned that neglecting due process often results in wrongful arrests, failed prosecutions, and violations of fundamental rights, which erode public confidence in the justice system.
“The foundation of a successful criminal justice system is a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution,” Zakariya stated.
“A well-executed investigation ensures that facts are accurately gathered and evidence is reliable, while diligent prosecution guarantees fairness and accountability in line with due process.”
The SAN stressed the importance of continuous reforms and closer collaboration among the police, the Ministry of Justice, and the judiciary to enhance criminal justice administration across Nigeria.
He further announced that Law Savannah Chambers would sponsor any police officer in Kebbi State who wishes to study law at the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, through to the Nigerian Law School, beginning from the next academic session.
Zakariya noted that with proper training and supervision, police investigators and prosecutors could play a pivotal role in ensuring justice, peace, and public trust in the system.
In his remarks, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Ismail, commended Zakariya for his commitment to strengthening police capacity and his sustained contributions to the development of the Nigeria Police Force in Kebbi State.
