A civic advocacy group, One Kano Agenda, OKA has called on residents of Kano State to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies as part of efforts to curb rising insecurity, particularly in Kano North.
Director General of One Kano Agenda OKA Ambassador Abbas Yakasai made the appeal while addressing journalists in Kano, stressing that security is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation between government, communities, and traditional institutions.

Yakasai said recent reports of unidentified individuals operating commercial motorcycles in several communities have raised public concern, especially as many of the riders do not speak Hausa.
He commended the state government and security agencies for their swift intervention, including the recent restriction on motorcycle operations within the metropolis.
He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s introduction of the SAFE CORRIDOR initiative, which has absorbed over 2,035 youths in its first phase for profiling, rehabilitation, and engagement in community security and neighborhood watch activities.
“This is the first time in Kano’s history that a government is addressing insecurity through both rehabilitation and enforcement,” Yakasai noted.
The group urged Emirate Councils, district heads, ward leaders, and community structures to strengthen coordination and ensure timely flow of information to security agencies.
It also encouraged residents to avoid confrontation, remain calm but vigilant, and cooperate with police, vigilante units, and intelligence frameworks.
“No suspicious activity should go unreported,”
One Kano Agenda expressed concern over what it described as “negative coverage by certain media outlets” and attempts by political actors to politicize insecurity for personal gain.
Yakasai questioned why some reports ignored allegations of police withdrawal from known flashpoints, leaving communities vulnerable.
“Reckless politicization of security matters is dangerous and counter-productive. The focus must remain on protecting lives, not advancing personal or political agendas”

The group also reacted to recent directives involving a former governor and a serving senator, urging security agencies to ensure due process, professionalism, and adherence to constitutional provisions regardless of the personalities involved.
In response to ongoing security concerns, One Kano Agenda announced plans to organize a Peace Walk and a Prayer for Divine Intervention aimed at promoting unity and seeking divine protection for Kano and northern Nigeria.
Yakasai urged media practitioners, political actors, and community leaders to prioritize the safety of residents over personal or political interests.
“Accurate reporting, responsible engagement, and collective vigilance are essential to ensuring lasting peace in Kano, the North, and Nigeria at large,”
