Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate the killing of five people by suspected political thugs in Kano, describing the incident as a serious escalation of violence.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the organisation condemned the attack, which occurred on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, and warned that it reflects a growing pattern of political thuggery in the state.
Amnesty International said it had obtained viral videos showing armed mobs chasing fleeing individuals, who were later killed. The group noted that some of the attackers were seen wearing clothing associated with the ruling party while chanting violent slogans.
According to the organisation, there are also reports that supporters of certain politicians have been targeting perceived political opponents, raising concerns about safety and the rule of law.
The group disclosed that it is investigating allegations linking some prominent politicians and government officials in Kano to the sponsorship of the armed groups, although no names have been officially confirmed.
“This incident reflects a dangerous escalation of a deadly cycle of political violence in Kano in recent months,” Amnesty International said, warning that such acts pose a threat to the right to life and public safety.
The organisation urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings, as well as any sponsors, are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
It also called on political actors and parties to respect the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights, including freedom of movement and association, especially during political activities.
Amnesty International further warned that the rise in politically motivated violence is creating a climate of fear that could undermine democratic participation in the state if left unchecked.
