The National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) and the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s forage and pasture seed system.
The agreement, signed at the NASC Headquarters, is expected to enhance sustainable livestock production, improve feed availability, and contribute to national food security through the development of an efficient forage and pasture seed value chain.
Under the partnership, both institutions will work together in key areas including research and development, seed production, certification, quality assurance, capacity building, and the distribution of improved forage and pasture crop varieties to farmers and livestock producers nationwide.
Stakeholders at the signing ceremony described the agreement as a major step toward addressing challenges associated with livestock feeding, pasture development, and sustainable animal production in Nigeria.
They noted that strengthening the forage and pasture seed system would improve livestock productivity, support agricultural growth, and encourage greater private sector participation in the sector.
The initiative is also expected to increase the availability of quality forage seeds and promote coordinated efforts in developing Nigeria’s livestock industry.
According to officials, the collaboration reflects the shared commitment of NASC and NAPRI to advancing agricultural development through research, innovation, and strategic institutional partnerships.
They added that the partnership aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable agricultural practices and build a resilient seed system capable of meeting the growing demands of the country’s livestock sector.
