The Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) has expressed deep shock and concern over the death of Miss Maimuna Sani, a student of St. Louis Girls Secondary School, Kano, calling for a comprehensive investigation and urgent reforms to strengthen student safety across schools in the state.
In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim, the education advocacy group extended its condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and all those affected by the tragic incident.
K-SAFE described the death of the student as a heartbreaking loss and stressed the need for accountability and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The forum noted that the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety, welfare, and security of students within educational institutions, emphasizing that schools should remain safe environments for learning, growth, and development.
According to the group, the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to strengthen child protection systems and improve safety standards across schools in Kano State.
To address the concerns arising from the incident, K-SAFE called on the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to constitute a high-level independent investigation committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.
The forum also urged the government to accelerate the implementation of the Safer Schools Policy and Framework across all schools in the state to enhance student protection mechanisms and reduce risks within learning environments.
In addition, K-SAFE recommended a review of the operational status of St. Louis Girls Secondary School and the adoption of any necessary regulatory measures pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The forum further advocated for a comprehensive safety and welfare audit of all boarding and day secondary schools in Kano State to identify and address systemic weaknesses in student protection and school management.
Recognising the emotional impact of the incident, K-SAFE called for the provision of psychosocial support and counselling services for affected students, staff members, and the bereaved family.
The forum reiterated its commitment to advocating for safe, secure, inclusive, and accountable learning environments for all children in Kano State and pledged solidarity with the family of the deceased during this difficult period.
