    WOFAN Partners NCRI to Enhance Agricultural Productivity

    The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) has launched a new initiative aimed at empowering Nigerian youths and women, particularly those living with disabilities PWDs.

    The project, which is in partnership with the National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), seeks to improve food security, create sustainable livelihoods, and promote economic growth.

    The Initiative, which kicked off in Abuja, brought together women’s groups from various states, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Kaduna, and Nasarawa.

    The event featured the launch of new products, including rice cakes made from locally sourced rice and soybeans.

    Hajiya Dr. Salamatu Garba, the country director WOFAN-ICON2, stated that the project aligns with the Mastercard Foundation’s goal of creating employment opportunities for 10 million young people, including women and those with disabilities.

    She pointed out that, the project aims to reduce post-harvest losses, increase farmers’ income, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

    “It also seeks to empower women and youths with skills and knowledge to improve food security and promote economic growth”

    The Director Innovation, Creativity, and Sustainability WOFAN-ICON2 project, Hajiya Maimuna Lawal revealed that 30-40% of rice produced in Nigeria is lost due to various factors.

    According to her, these losses occur as a result of pests and diseases, poor farming practices, inadequate storage and handling, and lack of access to equipment.

    To address these challenges, Maimuna emphasized the importance of developing new technologies for harvesting and processing agricultural products.

    She stressed that this would help reduce losses and increase income for farmers.

    A researcher at NCRI, Dr. Danbaba Nehemiah emphasized the importance of value addition to agricultural products, particularly rice.

    He highlighted the potential of converting rice waste into valuable products, such as animal feed and briquettes.

    Nehemiah, hinted that, the Initiative has received support from various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and civil society organizations.

    WOFAN’s Programs and Business manager, Taiwo Olawale emphasized that successful implementation of the strategies will create opportunities for economic growth, improved nutrition, and increased income for the benefit of the affected communities.
