The African Union has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nicholas Haysom, describing him as a distinguished diplomat and a committed advocate for peace.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, paid glowing tribute to the late diplomat, highlighting his decades of service to international peace and diplomacy.
Youssouf said Haysom was “not only a distinguished diplomat, but a trusted partner and a dear friend,” noting that his career was marked by a steadfast commitment to justice, dialogue, and human dignity.
He recalled Haysom’s role during the early years of democratic South Africa, where he served alongside Nelson Mandela, as well as his extensive efforts in promoting peace and stability across Africa and beyond.
The AU chairperson also praised Haysom’s personal qualities, describing him as humble, patient, and deeply committed to dialogue, even in the most difficult circumstances.
“Those of us who had the privilege to work with him will remember his humility, his patience, and his belief in dialogue,” Youssouf said.
Haysom served as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for South Sudan, where he played a key role in peacebuilding efforts in the conflict-affected nation.
Youssouf extended heartfelt condolences to Haysom’s family, the United Nations, the UN Secretary-General, and all those impacted by his life and service.
The African Union noted that Haysom’s legacy would continue to inspire efforts toward peace, stability, and cooperation across the continent and globally.
