Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has donated ₦50 million to the family of late Lt. Col. OC Okolo, who was killed during a Boko Haram attack in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area, on February 16, 2026.
The governor made the donation during the funeral service held in Obinofia Ndiuno, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, as part of ongoing efforts to support families of military personnel who died in active service.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Abdullahi Sabi Ishaq (Rtd), Governor Zulum said the gesture underscores his administration’s commitment to the welfare of families of fallen heroes.
He reaffirmed that the Borno State Government would continue to stand by families of officers and soldiers who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation, as well as those wounded or declared missing in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The governor noted that the intervention is part of a broader support framework, recalling that he recently approved ₦150 million for families of three other military officers who died in separate attacks across the state.
“My heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, friends, and colleagues of Lt. Col Okolo on his painful demise,” Zulum said in a statement.
He described the late officer as a gallant and dedicated serviceman whose contributions to national security would not be forgotten, while offering prayers for the repose of his soul and strength for the bereaved family.
Responding on behalf of the family, Prof. Stanley Okolo expressed appreciation to the governor for the financial support and solidarity shown during their time of grief.
He said the family was particularly touched by the donation and the delegation sent from Maiduguri to attend the funeral despite the short notice.
The funeral service was attended by military representatives, including Brigadier General G.A. Suru, who represented the Chief of Army Staff, and Brigadier General I.P. Omoke, representing the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI. Members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) and the host community were also present.
Governor Zulum extended condolences on behalf of the government and people of Borno State, reiterating his administration’s continued support for Nigeria’s armed forces and their families amid ongoing security challenges.
