The 74th Extraordinary Session of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Council of Ministers has reviewed major political, security and institutional developments affecting the East African region.
The session, held in Djibouti, was attended by Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera, alongside other representatives of IGAD member states.

Discussions focused on key regional challenges, including peace and security, the evolving situation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb, as well as developments in Sudan, Somalia and South Sudan.
Particular attention was given to the role of IGAD in facilitating dialogue, promoting political solutions and supporting sustainable peace and stability across the region.

The ministers also assessed the current financial and institutional situation of the regional organisation.
They highlighted the need to strengthen IGAD’s institutional capacity, financial sustainability and operational effectiveness to enable the organisation to discharge its mandate more effectively.

The session further highlighted the importance of enhancing regional cooperation in responding to emerging challenges and addressing threats to peace and stability.
The deliberations form part of ongoing efforts by IGAD member states to strengthen collective approaches to regional peace, security and development.
