Amnesty International has strongly condemned what it described as the failure of Nigerian authorities to protect lives and property amid escalating attacks by gunmen on several villages in Isa and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas of Sokoto State.
The organisation said the attacks, which occurred between yesterday and today, have led to the displacement of several communities, abductions and an increasing number of people reportedly unaccounted for.
According to Amnesty International, the growing insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria reflects the inability of authorities to effectively safeguard vulnerable communities from recurring violence.
“The government has an obligation to protect its population,” the organisation stated.
It further noted that the rising death toll, abductions and displacement across northern Nigeria demonstrate what it described as a serious failure by authorities to fulfil their responsibility of protecting citizens.
The rights group called for urgent measures to halt the attacks, protect affected communities and ensure accountability for those responsible for the violence.
