President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of his letter citing pressing family considerations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
President Tinubu commended the former police chief’s dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Egbetokun, who was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
Following his resignation, the President approved the appointment of Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
According to the statement, President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and leadership capacity to provide steady direction for the police during a critical period of national security challenges.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His nomination will subsequently be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring that the police remain professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out their constitutional duties.
