Kebbi State Government has commenced the free distribution of 110 truckloads of fertiliser and 100 metric tonnes of improved, climate-resilient seeds to about 120,000 farmers across the state as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.
Flagging off the statewide distribution exercise in Birnin Kebbi, Nasir Idris said the intervention is designed to support farmers during the 2026 wet farming season while enhancing climate resilience and sustainable agricultural production.
The governor explained that the initiative is being implemented under the Climate Change Adaptation Seed Support Programme and the Kaura Agricultural Development Agenda (KADAGE), describing it as a strategic investment aimed at increasing food production and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
According to Idris, the programme will reduce production costs, improve food security and help farmers adapt to the growing challenges posed by climate change, including erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, flooding and rising pest infestations.
He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Kebbi State’s economy, with more than 80 per cent of the population relying on farming as their primary source of livelihood. He stressed that supporting farmers is critical to ensuring sustainable economic growth and food sufficiency in the state.
Governor Idris further disclosed that 6,000 metric tonnes of NPK fertiliser would be distributed through the state’s 3,743 polling units to ensure the farm inputs reach genuine beneficiaries directly while eliminating the activities of middlemen and ensuring transparency in the distribution process.
