The Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has intensified efforts to promote tax awareness and voluntary compliance among business owners with a sensitisation exercise targeting key business associations in Rijiyar Zaki, one of Kano’s rapidly growing commercial districts.
The exercise, brought together members of several business groups operating in the area, including the Dorayi Market Association, the Automobile Dealers Association, and the Lale Furniture Makers Association.
Rijiyar Zaki, which has evolved from a developing settlement into a thriving commercial and residential hub, hosts a wide range of businesses and traders whose activities contribute significantly to economic growth and internally generated revenue in Kano State.
During the sensitisation programme, KIRS officials educated participants on critical aspects of taxation, including registration in the tax database, self-assessment procedures, accurate record-keeping of business transactions, withholding tax obligations, and the implementation of the newly introduced tax table for employees and business owners.
The officials stressed that tax compliance remains a cornerstone of sustainable development, noting that revenue generated through taxation enables government to provide essential infrastructure, healthcare services, education, security, and other public amenities for residents.
They encouraged business owners to embrace voluntary tax compliance and maintain proper financial records to facilitate seamless tax administration and avoid penalties associated with non-compliance.
Participants at the event welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial for the business community.
Representatives of the various associations observed that while many entrepreneurs are willing to fulfill their tax obligations, inadequate knowledge of tax procedures often serves as a barrier to compliance.
They commended KIRS for taking tax education directly to the grassroots and urged the agency to sustain similar awareness campaigns across markets and commercial clusters in the state.
According to them, continuous engagement and education will not only improve compliance levels but also strengthen public understanding of the role taxation plays in driving development and enhancing government service delivery.
The sensitisation exercise forms part of KIRS’ broader strategy to expand the tax net, improve voluntary compliance, and strengthen Kano State’s revenue generation efforts through stakeholder engagement and public enlightenment.
