The Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR) has called on the Kano State Government to urgently inaugurate the State Child Protection Law Implementation Committee to ensure effective enforcement of the Kano State Child Protection Law, 2023.
In a statement signed by its Executive Administrator, Nafisa Shehu Ibrahim, CHR emphasized that the law provides a comprehensive framework for safeguarding the safety, development, and overall wellbeing of children across the state.
The organization noted that the law clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders and promotes coordinated efforts to prevent abuse, respond to child protection cases, and ensure adequate care for vulnerable children.
CHR acknowledged the efforts of the government, particularly through the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, in conducting sensitization and awareness campaigns since the law was enacted. According to the group, these initiatives have successfully engaged community members, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, helping to deepen public understanding of child protection issues.
However, the organization expressed concern that the absence of an implementation committee continues to hinder the full operationalization of the law.
“Establishing the committee will enhance coordination among ministries, departments, and agencies, while also creating a structured platform for collaboration with civil society and community actors,” the statement said.
CHR stressed that inaugurating the committee is critical to translating the provisions of the law into tangible and sustainable outcomes for children in Kano State.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advancing child health and wellbeing, noting that strengthening child protection systems remains a key priority.
