The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the government expressed profound sorrow over the former military officer’s passing despite sustained efforts to secure his freedom.
According to the statement, the retired General died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement read.
The government noted that extensive efforts involving the state administration and various security agencies were undertaken to ensure his safe release, but unfortunately ended in tragedy.
Describing the development as a monumental loss, the government said the late General’s death was not only a blow to his immediate family and Katsina State but also to the entire country, given his distinguished service to Nigeria.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and Nigerians at large, characterizing the incident as a “dark moment” that underscores the urgent need for stronger collective action against insecurity.
“The Governor has described this incident as a dark moment and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against the criminal elements threatening the peace of our communities,” the statement added.
Governor Radda reaffirmed the state’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to combat banditry and bring perpetrators of criminal acts to justice.
He assured residents that the government’s determination to eliminate insecurity and safeguard lives and property remains unwavering.
The Katsina State Government also offered prayers for the repose of the late General’s soul and strength for his family to bear the loss.
“May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
