The Kano State Government says it has prioritised child spacing through the establishment of a dedicated budget line and the release of N79.798 million for child spacing services in the first quarter of 2026.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, revealed this during a media parley on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) and Child Birth Spacing (CBS) services organised by KanSLAM.
He said the state has also achieved 91 per cent availability of child spacing commodities across healthcare facilities in collaboration with development partners, including the Gates Foundation.

Dr. Labaran stressed the need for stronger community support, especially from men, to improve maternal and child health outcomes, noting that men play key roles in decision-making at family level and should support women financially and emotionally throughout pregnancy, labour and delivery.
He explained that the state government has introduced several interventions aimed at reducing maternal and perinatal deaths, including the establishment of the Maternal Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) team and a dedicated budget line to monitor and respond to maternal and newborn deaths across the state.
The commissioner added that hospitals in the state have been directed to establish newborn corners where babies are immediately assessed after delivery and provided emergency care when necessary.

He said the government has also intensified training and supervision of health workers on emergency obstetric and newborn care while encouraging pregnant women to attend antenatal clinics and deliver in healthcare facilities under the care of skilled birth attendants.
Dr. Labaran further revealed plans to establish six Special Baby Care Units in major hospitals outside the Kano metropolitan area to improve access to emergency newborn care services.
