The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) Programme, Kano State Project Implementation Unit (KSPIU), has trained and sensitized more than 800 members of Farmer Organizations (FOs) on the fundamentals of nutrition as part of efforts to promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture and healthier communities.
The two-day training, held from November 4 to 5, 2025, took place in Kadawa, Zaria Road, and Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State.
Speaking during the session, the State Gender and Social Safeguard Officer, SAPZ Programme KSPIU, Dr. Zainab Lawan Gwadabe, said the training aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of key nutrition concepts, including food groups, dietary diversity, and the link between agriculture and nutrition.
“The objective is to equip members of Farmer Organizations with practical strategies that will promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture and encourage healthier food choices within their communities,”
She added that the programme also plans to implement a cascading training model, where the participants will in turn train other farmers, ensuring the spread of nutrition knowledge across rural communities and fostering positive behaviour change.
According to Dr. Gwadabe, the training was organized in two phases during the third and fourth quarters of the programme, with each phase structured to deliver core knowledge on nutrition fundamentals. It placed strong emphasis on dietary diversity, the importance of a balanced diet, and the connection between agricultural practices and nutrition outcomes.
She reiterated that the initiative aligns with SAPZ’s broader objective of integrating nutrition education into agricultural activities to achieve sustainable food security and improved livelihoods in Kano State.
